Teachers gathered today to form Educators for Civil Liberties, an
alliance of academics, public school teachers, and other educators concerned
with upholding constitutionally-guaranteed rights.
“We’ve organized ourselves in response to the continuing repression of civil liberties following Mrs. Arroyo’s declaration of a state of emergency,” said Prof. Ramon Guillermo, the group’s spokesperson. “As educators, we cannot remain idle while this government curtails democratic rights, which provide the conditions for academic freedom.”
ACT denounces murder of activist teacher in Lucena
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers today issued a statement condemning the murder of one of its teacher-leaders in Quezon province.
Napoleon Pornasdoro, a faculty member of the Quezon National High School, vice-chairperson of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Quezon, and national council member of ACT, was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman in Lucena City last Monday, February 27.
