Teachers condemn beheading of kidnapped school principal in Sulu

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers today condemned the killing of a school principal abducted by bandits in Sulu.

Gabriel Canizares, 36, an elementary school principal, was abducted by armed men in Patikul town last Ocotber 19 and held for ransom. According to reports, his severed head was found near a gas station in downtown Jolo early this morning.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers today expressed alarm at reports that a school principal was abducted by alleged Abu Sayyaf bandits yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

According to news reports, Gabriel Canizares, 36, was abducted in Patikul town in the province of Sulu by 12 armed men while he was riding a passenger jeepney.

The Department of Education should work closely with the relevant local and national government agencies

Teachers denounce military surveillance on National Artist Lumbera

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers today denounced the military for conducting surveillance operations on National Artist for Literature Prof. Bienvenido Lumbera.

Lumbera is currently the national chairperson of ACT Teachers Partylist and a former national chairperson of ACT. He is also a convenor of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines . Recently, Lumbera played a prominent role in protesting Malacanang’s intervention in the National Artist awards.

Teachers denounce CCP tribute to Imelda, to hold protest

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers today announced that they will protest a lavish gala event to be held by the Cultural Center of the Philippines in honor of Imelda Marcos.

Entitled “Seven Arts, One Imelda,” the invitational gala event will be held on Friday, 8 p.m. at the CCP’s Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. According to a press release on the CCP website (http://www.culturalcenter.gov.ph/page.php?page_id=295), the tribute “extols the seven arts through signature pieces created during the period of Imelda’s patronage,” and will feature a number of well-known artists as well as the CCP’s resident dance and choral companies and philharmonic orchestra. The tribute is one of the highlights of the CCP’s celebration of its 40th year anniversary.
